남쪽하늘의 혜성들

 

요즘 레몬혜성(Lemmon, C/2012 F6)과 판스타스혜성(PanSTARRS, C/2011 L4)은 남반구의 하늘을 휩쓸고 있다. 

 

왼쪽 모서리 근처에 레몬혜성의 라임그린색 코마와 얇은 꼬리를 담고 있는 이 사진은 지난 2월 12일 총총이 별들이 들어찬 하늘을 배경으로 혜성의 움직임을 촬영한 동영상의 한 부분이다.

시선각도에 거의 근접하고 있는 레몬혜성의 경로는  남반구의 하늘을 아름답게 수놓고 있는 소마젤란 성운과 구상성단 큰부리새자리 47(47 Tucanae)에 아주 가깝게 붙어있다. 
 
동영상 뒤쪽에 등장하는, 좀더 광범위한 움직임을 보이는 흰색 꼬리의 판스타스 혜성은 현미경자리를 통과하고 있다. 
 
쌍안경이나 작은 천체망원경으로도 관측이 가능한 이 두개의 혜성은 점점 밝아지면서 북반구를 향하고 있으며 다음달 북반구에 나타나게 된다.

Sweeping Through Southern Skies

Explanation: For now, Comet Lemmon (C/2012 F6), and Comet PanSTARRS (C/2011 L4) are sweeping through southern skies. Lemmon's lime green coma and thin tail are near the left edge of this telephoto scene, a single frame from a timelapse video (vimeo here) recorded on February 12, tracking its motion against the background stars. Comet Lemmon's path brought it close to the line-of-sight to prominent southern sky treasures the Small Magellanic Cloud and globular cluster 47 Tucanae (right). Sporting a broader, whitish tail, Comet PanSTARRS appears in later video frames moving through the faint constellation Microscopium. Visible in binoculars and small telescopes, both comets are getting brighter and headed toward northern skies in coming months.
