IC 1396의 코끼리 코 성운

 

 

고위도에 저멀리 자리잡은 케페우스자리에, 발광성운과 젊은 성단의 복합체인 IC 1396을 가로지르며 휘감겨 있는 코끼리 코 성운은 마치 우주의 아기 코끼리 이야기를 묘사한 삽화같다.
물론 우주의 코끼리 코는 20광년이 넘어설만큼이나 길다.

 

이 조합 사진은 이 지역에 존재하는 이온화 수소, 황, 산소 원자로부터 복사된 빛을 협대역 필터에 담아내어 만들어졌다.

그리고 이렇게 만들어진 사진에 차가운 성간 먼지와 가스 뭉치의 윤곽을 그리고 있는 후퇴각을 가진 먼지능선들을 강조하였다. 

 

이처럼 쌓여있는 어두운 덩굴과 같은 모양의 구름들은 새로운 별을 만들어낼 수 있는 원재료들을 품고 있으며 그 안에는 원시별을 품고 있기도 하다.

3천광년 거리에 위치하지만 상대적으로 희미한 천체인 IC 1396은 하늘에서 거의 5도에 달하는 광활한 지역에 걸쳐 퍼져 있다.

이 확대 모자이크 사진은 그 중 2도 영역을 잡아낸 것인데 그 너비는 4개의 보름달을 합친 크기에 맞먹는다.

The Elephant's Trunk in IC 1396

Explanation: Like an illustration in a galactic Just So Story, the Elephant's Trunk Nebula winds through the emission nebula and young star cluster complex IC 1396, in the high and far off constellation of Cepheus. Of course, the cosmic elephant's trunk is over 20 light-years long. This composite was recorded through narrow band filters that transmit the light from ionized hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen atoms in the region. The resulting image highlights the bright swept-back ridges that outline pockets of cool interstellar dust and gas. Such embedded, dark, tendril-shaped clouds contain the raw material for star formation and hide protostars within the obscuring cosmic dust. Nearly 3,000 light-years distant, the relatively faint IC 1396 complex covers a large region on the sky, spanning over 5 degrees. This close-up mosaic covers a 2 degree wide field, about the size of 4 Full Moons.
