칠레 상공의 게겐샤인

태양의 정 반대편의 밤하늘은 가장 어두운 밤하늘을 보여줄까? 
 
사실은 그렇지 않다. 게겐샤인(gegenschein)이라 알려져 있는 희미한 불꽃이 태양으로부터 180도 주위의 극히 어두운 밤하늘에서 목격된다.
게겐샤인은 행성간 우주공간에 존재하는 작은 먼지 입자들에 태양빛이 반사되면서 만들어지는 것이다.
이 먼지 입자들은 밀리미터 정도의 크기의 소행성들로부터 떨어져나온 파편들이며 황도면을 따라 공전하고 있다.

 

이 사진은 지난해 촬영된 것으로 지금까지 촬영된 게겐샤인의 사진 중 비교적 멋진 광경을 보여주는 사진이다.
이 사진은 칠레 라스깜빠나스 천문대의 극히 어두운 하늘을 깊은 노출을 이용해서 촬영한 것이며 게겐샤인의 모습이 너무나 선명해서 그 주위를 둘러싼 빛까지도 보인다.

 

그 뒤로는 안드로메다 은하, 플레이아데스 성단, 캘리포니아 성운, 오리온 성운 바로 아래의 오리온 벨트와 그 안에 위치한 바나드의 고리 그리고
밝은 별 시리우스와 베델게우스가 도열해 있다.

 

게겐샤인은 높은 반사각으로 인해 태양 주변의 황도광과 구분된다.
낮동안 게겐샤인과 유사한 현상인 광배현상(the glory)은 비행기에 탔을 때 태양의 반대편에 있는 공기나 구름에 태양빛에 반사되는 현상을 통해 목격할 수 있다.

The Gegenschein Over Chile

Explanation: Is the night sky darkest in the direction opposite the Sun? No. In fact, a rarely discernable faint glow known as the gegenschein (German for "counter glow") can be seen 180 degrees around from the Sun in an extremely dark sky. The gegenschein is sunlight back-scattered off small interplanetary dust particles. These dust particles are millimeter sized splinters from asteroids and orbit in the ecliptic plane of the planets. Pictured above from last year is one of the more spectacular pictures of the gegenschein yet taken. Here a deep exposure of an extremely dark sky over Las Campanas Observatory in Chile shows the gegenschein so clearly that even a surrounding glow is visible. Notable background objects include the Andromeda galaxy, the Pleiades star cluster, the California Nebula, the belt of Orion just below the Orion Nebula and inside Barnard's Loop, and bright stars Sirius and Betelgeuse. The gegenschein is distinguished from zodiacal light near the Sun by the high angle of reflection. During the day, a phenomenon similar to the gegenschein called the glory can be seen in reflecting air or clouds opposite the Sun from an airplane.
