화성 '대혼란의 지형'의 3차원 비행영상

화성에서 가장 흥미로운 특징을 갖고 있는 지역들은 '대혼란의 지형'으로 언급되곤 한다.

수십 개에서 수백 개에 달하는 높이 2000미터의 산봉우리들이 이 광활한 지역에 펼쳐져 있다.

화성상공에서 바라보면 이들은 괴상하고 혼란스러운 양상을 띤다.

이와 같은 지형들은 태양계에서 가장 거대한 협곡인 마리너 협곡의 서쪽과 동쪽 모두에서 발견된다.

이 동영상에 보이는 히드라오테스 카오스(Hydraotes Chaos)는 이에 해당하는 전형적인 지역이다.

이 동영상을 만드는데 사용된 데이터와 가상 비행 데이터는 화성궤도위성인 ESA의 고해상도스테레오카메라(the High Resolution Stereo Camera)에 의해 획득된 것이다.

이 동영상은 빨간색-초록색 또는 빨간색-파란색의 입체 안경을 이용하여 입체 영상으로 즐길 수 있다.

DescriptionAmong the most interesting landforms on Mars are features referred to as ‘chaotic terrain’. Dozens or even hundreds of isolated mountains up to 2000 m high are scattered in these extensive regions. Seen from orbit, they form a bizarre, chaotic pattern. Such terrains are found over a large area to both the west and east of Valles Marineris, the largest canyon in the Solar System. Hydraotes Chaos, showcased in this video, is a typical example of this type of landscape.This anaglyph movie can be viewed using stereoscopic glasses with red–green or red–blue filters.

The data used to generate these images and the simulated flyover were acquired with the High Resolution Stereo Camera on ESA’s Mars Express orbiter.
