5500광년 거리에, 성운이 가득 들어차 있는 궁수자리에 위치하고 있는 M17이라 알려진 별의 생성 공장은 별폭풍과 강렬한 복사에 의해 조각된 천체이다.

 

3분의 1도 하늘 영역을 담고 있는 이 광대역 사진의 폭은 이곳까지의 거리를 고려했을 때 30광년에 해당한다.

고해상도로 잡아낸 이 천연색 합성 사진은 미리내의 중심을 장식하고 있는 별들을 배경으로 가스와 먼지 구름이 가득 들어찬 지역의 세밀한 모습을 보여주고 있다.

 

M17의 가스와 먼지 구덩이로부터 만들어진 뜨겁고 무거운 별들로부터 쏟아져 나온 폭풍과 고에너지 빛이 별 사이 우주 공간에 남아 있는 물질들을 천천히 깎아내면서 구멍이 뚫린듯 하면서도 물결이 일렁이는듯한 모습을 만들어내고 있다.

 

M17은 오메가 성운 또는 백조 성운이라는 이름으로도 알려져 있다.

Star Factory Messier 17

Explanation: Sculpted by stellar winds and radiation, the star factory known as Messier 17 lies some 5,500 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation Sagittarius. At that distance, this 1/3 degree wide field of view spans over 30 light-years. The sharp composite, color image, highlights faint details of the region's gas and dust clouds against a backdrop of central Milky Way stars. Stellar winds and energetic light from hot, massive stars formed from M17 stock of cosmic gas and dust have slowly carved away at the remaining interstellar material producing the cavernous appearance and undulating shapes. M17 is also known as the Omega Nebula or the Swan Nebula.
