푸른빛과 황금빛의 토성

왜 토성의 일부가 파란색으로 보이는 것일까?

이 사진은 사람이 토성에 가까이 다가가서 맨눈으로 본다면 보이게 될 토성의 모습을 최대한 가깝게 구현해 본 것이다.

 

이 사진은 2006년 3월 카시니호에 의해 촬영되었다.

사진에서 토성의 아름다운 고리는 얇은 수평선처럼 보인다.

이 토성 고리는 자신의 복잡한 구조를 사진 위쪽에 드리워진 검은 그림자를 통해 보여주고 있다.

 

제트분출을 뿜어내는 지름 500킬로미터의 토성의 달 엔켈라두스가 토성 고리면에 돋은 혹처럼 보인다.

 

사진의 토성 북반구 지역이 부분적으로 파랗게 보이는 것은 지구의 하늘이 파랗게 보이는 것과 같은 이유이다. 

토성이나 지구 모두 대기에서 구름이 존재하지 않는 부분의 분자들은 붉은색보다는 파란색을 효과적으로 산란시킨다.

그러나 토성의 구름을 깊숙히 바라보면 토성 특유의 황금빛 색조가 두드러지게 나타난다.

 

그런데 토성의 남반구는 북반구와 달리 파란색 색조가 나타나지 않는다. 

이에 대한 한 가지 가설은 남반구의 경우 구름이 더 높은 대기에 위치하고 있을 것으로 제안하고 있다.

 

또한 토성의 구름들이 왜 황금색의 색조를 띠는지 역시 전혀 알려지지 않은 상태이다.

 

이 사진을 찍은 카시니호는 다음달 토성의 대기를 향해 추락하면서 대단원의 막을 내리게 된다.

Saturn in Blue and Gold

Explanation: Why is Saturn partly blue? The featured picture of Saturn approximates what a human would see if hovering close to the giant ringed world. The image was taken in 2006 March by the robot Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn. Here Saturn's majestic rings appear directly only as a thin vertical line. The rings show their complex structure in the dark shadows they create on the image left. Saturn's fountain moon Enceladus, only about 500 kilometers across, is seen as the bump in the plane of the rings. The northern hemisphere of Saturn can appear partly blue for the same reason that Earth's skies can appear blue -- molecules in the cloudless portions of both planet's atmospheres are better at scattering blue light than red. When looking deep into Saturn's clouds, however, the natural gold hue of Saturn's clouds becomes dominant. It is not known why southern Saturn does not show the same blue hue -- one hypothesis holds that clouds are higher there. It is also not known why Saturn'sclouds are colored gold. Next month, Cassini will end its mission with a final dramatic dive into Saturn's atmosphere.
