NGC 404 미라크의 유령

유령에 관한 한 미라크(Mirach)의 유령은 그다지 무서운 유령이 아니다.

 

미라크의 유령은 천문학자들에게 잘 알려져 있는 희미하게 보풀이 인 은하이다. 

이 은하는 밝은 별 미라크와 거의 동일 시선 상에 위치하고 있다.

 

사진 중앙에 자리잡고 있는 별 미라크는 안드로메다 베타별로도 불린다.

 

약 200 광년 거리에 있는 미라크는 적색거성으로서 태양보다 낮은 온도를 가지고 있다. 

그러나 몸집은 훨씬 크고 따라서 고유 밝기도 태양보다 훨씬 밝은 별이다.

 

미라크로부터 뿜어져나오는 광채와 회절상은 미라크 가까이에 있는 천체들을 가리게 되고 압도적인 별빛에 의해 겉보기 상으로 가까이에 있는 은하 역시 마치 망원경 내부 반사가 일어난 것처럼 희미하고 흐릿하게 보이게 만든다.

 

사진에서 미라크의 바로 상단 왼쪽으로 보이는 미라크의 유령 은하는 NGC 404로 등재되어 있으며 1천만 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

Mirach's Ghost

Explanation: As far as ghosts go, Mirach's Ghost isn't really that scary. Mirach's Ghost is just a faint, fuzzy galaxy, well known to astronomers, that happens to be seen nearly along the line-of-sight to Mirach, a bright star. Centered in this star field, Mirach is also called Beta Andromedae. About 200 light-years distant, Mirach is a red giantstar, cooler than the Sun but much larger and so intrinsically much brighter than our parent star. In most telescopic views, glare and diffraction spikes tend to hide things that lie near Mirach and make the faint, fuzzy galaxy look like a ghostly internal reflection of the almost overwhelming starlight. Still, appearing in this sharp image just above and to the left of Mirach, Mirach's Ghost is cataloged as galaxy NGC 404 and is estimated to be some 10 million light-years away.
