피라미드 산 위의 북두칠성

언제 당신은 이 자리별을 식별하는 방법을 배웠는가?

전세계 많은 사람들이 이 자리별에 익숙하지만 여기에는 서로다른 상징과 전승으로 엮인 서로다른 문화가 서려 있다.

 

미국에서는 큰국자라고 알려져 있는 이 자리별은 1922년 국제천문연맹에서 큰곰자리로 식별한 별자리의 일부를 구성하고 있다.

 

이 별들의 이름은 왼쪽에서 오른쪽으로 각각 알카이드(Alkaid), 미자르/알골(Mizar/Alcor), 알리오스(Alioth), 매그레츠(Megrez), 페크다(Phecda), 메락(Merak), 두베(Dubhe)로 불린다.

 

물론 별자리를 구성하고 있는 별들이 서로 물리적으로 연관되어 있는 것은 아니다.

그러나 놀랍게도 북두칠성을 구성하는 대부분의 별들은 서로 같은 방향으로 우주 공간을 헤쳐나가고 있다. 

서로 속성을 공유하는 별들이 펼쳐져 있는 범위는 훨씬 크게 나타난다.

 

이렇게 공통된 움직임을 보이는 별들은 이들이 30광년의 폭에 평균 75광년씩 거리가 벌어져 있음에도 불구하고 서로 느슨하게 묶여 있는 별무리임을 알려주는 단서가 된다.

이 별무리는 큰곰자리이동무리별(the Ursa Major Moving Group)이라는 이름으로 불린다.

Big Dipper over Pyramid Mountain

Explanation: When did you first learn to identify this group of stars? Although they are familiar to many people around the world, different cultures have associated thisasterism with different icons and folklore. Known in the USA as the Big Dipper, the stars are part of a constellation designated by the International Astronomical Union in 1922 as the Great Bear (Ursa Major). The recognized star names of these stars are (left to right) Alkaid, Mizar/Alcor, Alioth, Megrez, Phecda, Merak, and Dubhe. Of course, stars in any given constellation are unlikely to be physically related. But surprisingly, most of the Big Dipper stars do seem to be headed in the same direction as theyplough through space, a property they share with other stars spread out over an even larger area across the sky. Their measured common motion suggests that they all belong to a loose, nearby star cluster, thought to be on average only about 75 light-years away and up to 30 light-years across. The cluster is more properly known as theUrsa Major Moving Group. The featured image captured the iconic stars recently above Pyramid Mountain in Alberta, Canada.
