NGC 3324와 가브리엘라 미스트랄 성운(the Gabriela Mistral Nebula)

밝게 빛나는 이 우주구름은 산개별무리 NGC 3324의 어린별들이 뿜어내는 별폭풍과 복사에 의해 조각된 구름이다.

타오르는 원자가스 및 검은 그림자를 드리우고 있는 먼지 구름들과 함께 주머니 모양을 만들고 있는 이 별 생성구역의 지름은 약 35광년이다.

이곳은 성운들이 잔뜩 들어차 있는 남반구의 별자리, 용골자리 방향으로 7,500 광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

 

협대역사진을 이어붙여 만들어진 이 사진에서 이온화 황과 수소, 산소에서 뿜어져나오는 복사는 각각 붉은색과 초록색 푸른색으로 표시되어 있다. 

이러한 색채 배열은 그 유명한 허블 팔레트에 입각한 것이다.

 

밝게 보이는 능선들은 차갑고 불투명한 먼지들에 의해 구획되어 있는데 오른쪽으로 사람의 옆모습과 같은 윤곽이 만들어져 있다.

이 지역은 노벨상을 수상한 칠레 시인의 이름을 따 가브리엘라 미스트랄 성운(the Gabriela Mistral Nebula)이라 불린다.

Explanation: This bright cosmic cloud was sculpted by stellar winds and radiation from the hot young stars of open cluster NGC 3324. With dust clouds in silhouette against its glowing atomic gas, the pocket-shaped star-forming region actually spans about 35 light-years. It lies some 7,500 light-years away toward the nebula rich southern constellation Carina. A composite of narrowband image data, the telescopic view captures the characteristic emission from ionized sulfur, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms mapped to red, green, and blue hues in the popular Hubble Palette. For some, the celestial landscape of bright ridges of emission bordered by cool, obscuring dust alongthe right side create a recognizable face in profile. The region's popular name is the Gabriela Mistral Nebula for the Nobel Prize winning Chilean poet.
