M78

 

 

오리온 자리에는 성간 먼지구름과 불타오르는 성운들이 풍부하게 존재한다.

 

이 광대역 사진에 보이는 다채로운 색을 띤 천체는 이중에서 가장 밝은 천체중 하나인 M78로서 오리온 벨트의 북쪽 부근에 위치하고 있다.

이 천체까지의 거리는 약 1천 5백 광년이며 푸른빛으로 빛나는 이 반사성운의 지름은 대략 5광년 정도이다.

 

파란빛으로 보이는 색조는 뜨겁고 어린 별에서 발생한 푸른 빛이 우주 먼지에 반사되기 때문에 나타나는 것이다.

 

M78의 바로 왼쪽에 있는 천체는 반사성운 NGC 2071이다.

 

M78의 바로 우측으로 규모는 작으나 밀집된 형태로 보이는 성운은 맥네일의 성운(McNeil's Nebula)으로
이 성운은 최근 우리 태양과 같은 별의 형성과 연관된 변광성운으로 밝혀졌다.

깊은 노출을 이용해 얻은 이 사진에는, 희미하지만 불타는 수소가스의 원자에서 방출된 붉은 빛이 배어 있는 이 지역의 모습도 함께 나타나고 있다.
