4중 달무리

 

 

간혹 대기중에 들어차 있는 얼음 알갱이들이 하강하면서 태양이나 달 주위에 아치 또는 헤일로를 만들어내는 거대한 렌즈로 작용하기도 한다. 

 

이 사진은 지난 토요일 저녁 스페인 마드리드 근처에서 이와 같은 현상이 발생한 장면을 촬영한 것으로 여기에는 밝은 달 뿐 아니라 무려 네 개의 헤일로가 만들어진 흔치 않은 광경이 담겨 있다. 

 

사진 상단 정 중앙에 밝게 빛나고 있는 천체가 달이다. 

 

달빛이 무질서하게 널려있는 육각형 얼음 알갱이에 굴절될 때 22도 시반경으로 굴절된 빛이 만들어낸 헤일로가 달 주위를 둘러싸고 있다.  

22도각 아치의 수평방향 연장선이 일렬로 도열한 얼음 알갱이들에 의해 만들어진 헤일로에 외접하고 있다. 

 

여기도 대단히 희귀하게도 어떤 달빛들은 좀더 멀리 떨어진 얼음 알갱이들에 의해 굴절되면서 마치 무지개와 같은 모양의 46도각의 아치를 만들어내고 있는데 이 사진에 담긴 아름다운 겨울 풍광 바로 위에 그 모습이 보이고 있다. 

 

더군다나 46도각 원형 헤일로 중 일부가 이 사진에 보이는데,  이 현상은 - 특히 달에 있어서는 - 대단히 희귀한 현상으로서 결국 4겹의 헤일로가 사진에 담겨 있는 것이다. 

 

마드리드 근처 시에라 과다라마 산맥의 푸에르토 나바세라다 도로 길가에 눈을 뒤집어 쓴 나무의 풍경이 앞쪽으로 보이고 있다. 

 

하늘에는 유명한 겨울의 밤하늘을 만들어주는 시리우스, 오리온 벨트, 베텔게우스의 모습이 안쪽과 바깥쪽 아치 사이에 담겨 있다. 

 

헤일로와 아치는 일반적으로 수 분에서 수 시간동안 지속된다. 

따라서 만약 당신이 이러한 광경을 본다면 가족이나, 친구, 이웃들을 초대하여 하늘이 만들어내는 이 비범한 굴절 현상을 나눌만한 충분한 시간을 확보할 수 있을 것이다.

A Quadruple Lunar Halo Over Spain

Explanation: Sometimes falling ice crystals make the atmosphere into a giant lens causing arcs and halos to appear around the Sun or Moon. This past Saturday night was just such a time near Madrid, Spain, where a winter sky displayed not only a bright Moon but as many as four rare lunar halos. The brightest object, near the top of the above image, is the Moon. Light from the Moon refracts through tumbling hexagonal ice crystals into a 22 degree halo seen surrounding the Moon. Elongating the 22 degree arc horizontally is acircumscribed halo caused by column ice crystals. More rare, some moonlight refracts through more distant tumbling ice crystals to form a (third) rainbow-like arc 46 degrees from the Moon and appearing here just above a picturesque winter landscape. Furthermore, part of a whole 46 degree circular halo is also visible, so that an extremely rare -- especially for the Moon -- quadruple halo was actually imaged. The snow-capped trees in the foreground line the road Puerto de Navacerrada in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range near Madrid. Far in the background is a famous winter skyscape that includes Sirius, the belt of Orion, and Betelgeuse all visible between the inner and outer arcs. Halos and arcs typically last for minutes to hours, so if you do see one there should be time to invite family, friends or neighbors to share your unusual lensed vista of the sky.
