세상의 끝에서 만난 개기일식

개기일식을 보기 위해 땅끝까지 가볼 생각이 있는가?

만약 땅끝까지 갔다면 그곳에 이미 또다른 사람이 와 있다는 것을 알았을 때의 놀라움도 느껴볼 생각이 있는가?

 

2003년 태양과 달과 남극대륙 그리고 두 명의 촬영가가 독특한 개기일식이 일어나는 동안 남극대륙에서 일렬로 서 있었다.

극단의 환경에도 불구하고 열정 넘치는 일단의 일식 사냥꾼들은 세계의 바닥까지 쫓아가 태양이 달 뒤편으로 잠겨드는 초현실적인 순간을 만끽하였다.

 

그 와중에 담아낸 보석들 중 하나가 이 사진이다.

이 사진은 일식이 일어나던 당시 상황이 사람의 눈에 어떻게 보였는지를 최대한 현실에 가깝게 구현하기 위해 4장의 사진을 합성한 것이다.

 

사진이 촬영되는 동안 달과 태양이 남극대륙의 능선위로 모습을 드러냈다.

갑작스럽게 어둠이 덮쳐왔을 때 달 주위로는 장엄한 태양의 코로나가 그 모습을 드러냈다.

그리고 순전히 우연으로 또다른 사진가의 모습이 일식을 담고 있는 비디오 카메라의 담겼다.

그 사진가의 왼쪽으로 장비가방과 접이식 의자가 놓여져 있다.

 

3주 정도가 지나면 이보다는 훨씬 쉽게 볼 수 있는 일식의 장관이 미국에서 펼쳐진다.

A Total Eclipse at the End of the World

Explanation: Would you go to the end of the world to see a total eclipse of the Sun? If you did, would you be surprised to find someone else there already? In 2003, the Sun, the Moon, Antarctica, and two photographers all lined up in Antarctica during an unusual total solar eclipse. Even given the extreme location, a group ofenthusiastic eclipse chasers ventured near the bottom of the world to experience the surreal momentary disappearance of the Sun behind the Moon. one of the treasures collected was the featured picture -- a composite of four separate images digitally combined to realistically simulate how the adaptive human eye saw the eclipse. As the image was taken, both the Moon and the Sun peeked together over an Antarctic ridge. In the sudden darkness, the magnificent corona of the Sun became visible around the Moon. Quite by accident, another photographer was caught in one of the images checking his video camera. Visible to his left are an equipment bag and a collapsible chair. A more easily visible solar eclipse will occur in about three weeks and be visible from the USA.
