뉴호라이즌호로부터 바라본 플루토 통과

플루토 상공을 날 수 있다면 어떤 모습을 보게 될까?

2015년 7월, 뉴호라이즌호가 이 머나먼 세계를 시속 8만 킬로의 속도로 빠르게 통과하면서 바로 이 일을 연출해 냈다.

 

최근 이 멋진 통과로부터 전송된 여러 사진들을 이용하여 2분 분량의 동영상이 만들어졌다.

동영상 제작을 위해 사진의 색채와 수직고도는 과장되어 표현되었다.

 

여행이 시작되면 물얼음으로 구성되었지만 얼어붙은 질소의 색채를 뒤집어 쓰고 있는것으로 추정되는 산맥 위로 밝은 여명이 나타난다.

곧이어 우측으로 대부분 고체질소로 구성된 평평한 바다를 볼 수 있다.

이 평평한 바다는 특이한 다각형의 형태로 분절되어 있는데 이는 상대적으로 따뜻한 내부에서 융기가 발생하면서 만들어진 것으로 추정되고 있다.

 

크레이터와 얼음 산맥들의 풍경이 주로 펼쳐진다.

 

동영상은 블레이디드(bladed)라고 명명된 지형위에서 점점 어두워지며 끝을 맺는다.

이곳에 블레이디드라는 이름이 붙은 이유는 이 지형이 수 킬로미터 크기의 간극으로 갈라진 500미터 높이의 능선들로 구성되어 있기 때문이다.

 

지금 뉴호라이즌 호는 상당한 운동량으로 추진되고 있어 플루토로 다시 돌아오기는 어렵다.

그러나 뉴호라이즌호는 새로운 카이퍼밸트 대의 천체인 2014 MU 69를 향해 나가고 있으며 2019년 새해 첫날 이 천체를 통과하게 된다.

Pluto Flyover from New Horizons

Explanation: What if you could fly over Pluto -- what might you see? The New Horizons spacecraft did just this in 2015 July as it shot past the distant world at a speed of about 80,000 kilometers per hour. Recently, many images from this spectacular passage have been color enhanced, vertically scaled, and digitally combined into thefeatured two-minute time-lapse video. As your journey begins, light dawns on mountains thought to be composed of water ice but colored by frozen nitrogen. Soon, to your right, you see a flat sea of mostly solid nitrogen that has segmented into strange polygons that are thought to have bubbled up from a comparatively warminterior. Craters and ice mountains are common sights below. The video dims and ends over terrain dubbed bladed because it shows 500-meter high ridges separated by kilometer-sized gaps. Although the robotic New Horizons spacecraft has too much momentum ever to return to Pluto, it has now been targeted at Kuiper Belt object2014 MU 69, which it should shoot past on New Year's Day 2019.
