NGC 2442

뒤틀어진 은하 NGC 2442는 남반구의 별자리인 날치자리에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 

 

5천만 광년 거리에 위치하는 이 은하의 두 개 나선팔이 뚜렷한 중심 막대로부터 뻗어나오면서 마치 갈고리와 같은 모습을 연출하고 있다. 

 

허블우주망원경과 유럽남반구 천문대의 관측 데이터를 이어붙여 확대한 이 사진에는 이 은하의 놀랍도록 세밀한 모습이 담겨 있다. 

시선을 막아서는 먼지 띠들과 젋은 별들로 구성되어 있는 별무리들, 붉은 빛을 뿜어내는 별 생성구역이 좀더 나이든 별들이 몰려 있는 노란 빛의 중심부를 감싸고 있다.  

 

한편 이 고해상도 사진에는 NGC 2442의 별무리와 성운들 사이로 훨씬 더 멀리 떨어져 있는 은하들도 그 모습을 드러내고 있다. 

 

NGC 2442까지의 거리를 고려했을 때 사진의 폭은 75,000 광년을 담고 있다.

Explanation: Distorted galaxy NGC 2442 can be found in the southern constellation of the flying fish, (Piscis) Volans. Located about 50 million light-years away, the galaxy's two spiral arms extending from a pronounced central bar have a hook-like appearance in wide-field images. But this mosaicked close-up, constructed from Hubble Space Telescope and European Southern Observatory data, follows the galaxy's structure in amazing detail. Obscuring dust lanes, young blue star clusters and reddish star formingregions surround a core of yellowish light from an older population of stars. The sharp image data also reveal more distant background galaxies seen right through NGC 2442's star clusters and nebulae. The image spans about 75,000 light-years at the estimated distance of NGC 2442.
