허셜우주망원경이 적외선으로 바라본 영혼성운

에티오피아 여왕의 영혼속에서 별들이 만들어지고 있다. 

 

좀더 정확히 말해, 거대한 별생성구역인 영혼성운은 카시오페이아자리 방향에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 

카시오페이아자리는 고대 나일강 상류 지역을 지배한 왕국의 허영심 많은 여왕에 대한 신화를 간직하고 있는 별자리이다. 

 

영혼성운은 여러 산개별무리와 W5로 알려져 있는 거대라디오전파원, 갓태어난 무거운 별들의 폭풍으로 만들어진 거대한 거품들을 품고 있다. 

 

6,500광년 거리에 위치하는 영혼성운은 100 광년에 걸쳐 펼쳐져 있으며 사진에는 종종 바로 옆에 위치하는 하트성운(IC 1805)과 함께 등장하곤 한다. 

 

성운의 세부 모습을 인상적으로 담고 있는 이 사진은 허셜우주망원경에 의해 적외선 영역에서 촬영된 것이다.

Explanation: Stars are forming in the Soul of the Queen of Aethiopia. More specifically, a large star forming region called the Soul Nebula can be found in the direction of the constellation Cassiopeia, who Greek mythology credits as the vain wife of a King who long ago ruled lands surrounding the upper Nile river. The Soul Nebula houses several open clusters of stars, a large radio source known as W5, and huge evacuated bubbles formed by the winds of young massive stars. Located about 6,500 light yearsaway, the Soul Nebula spans about 100 light years and is usually imaged next to its celestial neighbor the Heart Nebula (IC 1805). The featured image, impressively detailed, was taken in several bands of infrared light by the orbiting Herschel Space Observatory.
