포말하우트를 두르고 있는 얼음고리

왜 거대한 얼음고리가 포말하우트를 두르고 있는 것일까?

 

포말하우트는 흥미로운 별이다. 

약 25광년 거리에 있는 이 별은 밤하늘에서 쉽게 눈에 띄는 별이며 최소한 하나의 행성을 거느리고 있고 - 이 행성의 이름은 데이곤(Dagon)이다 - 

이 얼음 고리 안쪽으로 여러 개의 먼지 원반을 거느리고 있다. 

 

보다 흥미로운 것은 약 20년 전에 처음으로 발견된 외곽 고리일 것이다. 

이 고리의 안쪽 경계는 독특하게 날카롭게 형성되어 있다. 

 

ALMA가 최근 촬영한 사진에는 이 외곽 고리가 완벽하면서도 유례없이 세밀하게 담겨 있다. 

이 사진은 ALMA의 사진에 허블우주망원경이 촬영한 사진을 겹쳐놓은 것으로 ALMA가 촬영한 부분은 분홍색으로, 허블우주망원경이 촬영한 부분은 파란색으로 표시되어 있다. 

 

이 고리에 대한 선구적인 가설은 이 고리가 여러 혜성과 미행성들간의 여러 차례에 걸친 파괴적인 충돌의 결과로 간주하고 있다. 

또한 이 고리의 경계는 아직 관측되지 않은 행성들의 중력에 의해 형성된 것으로 가정하고 있다. 

 

만약 그게 맞다면 포말하우트 주위를 돌고 있는 안쪽의 행성들은 거대한 유성과 혜성들에 의해 지속적으로 강타당하고 있을 것이다. 

우리 태양계에서 이와 유사한 일들이 벌어진 시기는 '후기운석대충돌기(Late Heavy Bombardment)'로 알려진 시기로서 약 40억년 전이었다.

Ice Ring around Nearby Star Fomalhaut

Explanation: Why is there a large ice ring around Fomalhaut? This interesting star -- easily visible in the night sky -- lies only about 25 light-years away and is known to be orbited by at least one planet, Dagon, as well as several inner dust disks. More intriguing, perhaps, is an outer ring, first discovered about 20 years ago, that has an unusually sharp inner boundary. The featured recent image by the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) shows this outer ring with complete and unprecedented detail -- in pink -- superposed on a Hubble image of the Fomalhaut system in blue. A leading theory holds that this ring resulted from numerous violent collisions involving icy comets and planetesimals, the component objects of planets, while the ring boundaries are caused by the gravity of yet unseen planets. If correct, any interior planets in theFomalhaut system are likely being continually pelted by large meteors and comets -- an onslaught last seen in our own planetary system four billion years ago in an episode called the Late Heavy Bombardment.
