쇼티 크레이터의 아폴로 17호

1972년 12월, 아폴로 17호의 우주비행사 유진 서넌(Eugene Cernan)과 헤리슨 슈미트(Harrison Schmitt)는 달의 타우루스-리트로우 계곡에서 75시간을 체류하였다.

그 동안 동료 로널드 에반스(Ronald Evans)는 달 궤도선에 머물로 있었다.

 

이 고해상도 사진은 서넌이 촬영한 것으로 슈미트가 계곡 바닥을 탐사하고 있을 때 촬영한 것이다. 

 

사진에는 쇼티 크레이터(Shorty Crater)의 모서리에 서 있는 달 탐사차와 그 왼쪽에 서 있는 슈미트의 모습이 담겨 있다.

지질학자인 슈미트는 이 부근에서 오랜지 색의 토양을 발견하기도 했다.

 

아폴로 17호의 승무원들은 총 110킬로그램에 달하는 바위와 토양 샘플을 가지고 귀환하였는데 이는 이전까지 어느 달착륙선에 의해 운반된 양보다 훨씬 많은 양이었다.

 

45년이 지난 지금까지 서넌과 슈미트는 달에 발을 디딘 마지막 인류로 남아있다.

Apollo 17 at Shorty Crater

Explanation: In December of 1972, Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt spent about 75 hours on the Moon in the Taurus-Littrow valley, while colleague Ronald Evans orbited overhead. This sharp image was taken by Cernan as he and Schmitt roamed the valley floor. The image shows Schmitt on the left with thelunar rover at the edge of Shorty Crater, near the spot where geologist Schmitt discovered orange lunar soil. The Apollo 17 crew returned with 110 kilograms of rock and soil samples, more than was returned from any of the other lunar landing sites. Forty five years later, Cernan and Schmitt are still the last to walk on the Moon.
