M42 : 오리온 대성운

오리온 성운과 같이, 지근거리의 별들의 육아실로서 상상력을 들뜨게 만드는 풍경은 많지 않다.

성운의 불타오르는 가스가 별사이우주공간에 자리잡은 거대 분자 구름의 가장자리에 위치하는 뜨겁고 어린 별을 둘러싸고 있다.

 

이 인상적인 사진에 보이는 수많은 먼지다발 구조물들은 실제로는 충격파로서 빠르게 움직이는 물질이 전면에 위치하는 느리게 움직이는 가스와 충돌하면서 만들어진 것이다.

 

오리온 성운은 40광년에 걸쳐 펼쳐져 있으며 우리 태양과 같은 은하나선팔에, 지구로부터 1500광년 떨어져 있는 성운이다.

 

오리온 대성운은 대중적인 별자리인 오리온 자리의 벨트를 구성하고 있는 3개의 별 왼쪽 아래에 위치하고 있으며 육안으로도 쉽게 찾을 수 있는 천체이다.

 

지난 달 말에 촬영된 이 사진은 3개 컬러 필터로 2시간에 걸쳐 촬영된 오리온성운의 모습을 보여주고 있다.

말머리 성운을 포함하고 있는 오리온 성운의 분자구름 복합체는 향후 10만년 동안 서서이 흩어지게 될 것이다.

M42: The Great Orion Nebula

Explanation: Few astronomical sights excite the imagination like the nearby stellar nursery known as the Orion Nebula. The Nebula's glowing gas surrounds hot young stars at the edge of an immense interstellar molecular cloud. Many of the filamentary structures visible in the featured image are actually shock waves - fronts where fast moving material encounters slow moving gas. The Orion Nebula spans about 40 light years and is located about 1500 light years away in the same spiral arm of our Galaxy as theSun. The Great Nebula in Orion can be found with the unaided eye just below and to the left of the easily identifiable belt of three stars in the popular constellation Orion. The featured image, taken last month, shows a two-hour exposure of the nebula in three colors. The whole Orion Nebula cloud complex, which includes the Horsehead Nebula, will slowly disperse over the next 100,000 years.
