여우털 성운

 

이 '우주의 야수'는 뜨겁고 젊은 별들이 쏟아내는 고에너지의 빛과 폭풍의 상호작용으로 생성된 우주먼지와 가스로 만들어진 것이다.

 

이 성운은 그 모양과 눈으로 느껴지는 재질, 그리고 색깔을 더해 여우털 성운(Fox Fur Nebula)이라는 애칭으로 불린다.

 

사진의 왼쪽에 푸른 빛은 촬영된 영역의 왼쪽 바로 너머에 위치하고 있는 밝은 별, S Mon 으로부터 발생한 빛이 먼지에 반사되면서 나타나는 것이다.

 

분홍빛과 갈색빛이 얼룩덜룩하게 섞여 나타나는 지역은 우주먼지와 전리수소가스로부터 복사된 붉은 빛이 섞여 나타나는 것이다.

S Mon은 젊은 산개성단인 NGC 2264를 구성하는 별로서 외뿔소 자리 방향으로 2500광년 떨어져 있으며 원뿔 성운(Cone Nebula)의 바로 위에 위치하고 있다.

Explanation: This interstellar beast is formed of cosmic dust and gas interacting with the energetic light and winds from hot young stars. The shape, visual texture, and color, combine to give the region the popular name Fox Fur Nebula. The characteristic blue glow on the left is dust reflecting light from the bright star S Mon, just beyond the left edge of the image. Mottled pink and brown areas are a combination of the cosmic dust and reddish emission from ionized hydrogen gas. S Mon is part of a young open cluster of stars, NGC 2264, located about 2,500 light years away toward the constellation of Monoceros, just north of the Cone Nebula.
