리겔과 마녀머리 성운

두 배, 두 배, 고난도 재앙도, 불길아 타올라라 가마솥아 끓어라

아마도 맥베드는 마녀머리 성운의 조언을 받았어야 했을 것이다. 

 

도발적인 행태를 갖춘 반사 성운은 오리온 별자리의 밝은 별 리겔과 함께 존재하고 있다. 

공식적인 호칭으로는 IC 2118이라 불리는 마녀 머리 성운은 50광년에 걸쳐 뻗어 있으며 리겔의 별빛을  반사해내고 있는 우주 먼지 다발로 구성되어 있다. 

이 우주의 초상화에서 마녀 머리 성운과 리겔을 둘러싸고 있는 먼지들이 뿜어내고 있는  파란색은 리겔의 강력한 푸른빛의 별빛과 

이 별빛을 받아서 반사해내고 있는 먼지 다발들이 붉은색보다는 푸른색을 더 효율적으로 산란시키기 때문에 나타나고 있는 것이다. 

비록 지구의 대기는 주로 질소와 산소로 구성되어 있기는 하지만 이와 동일한 물리과정이 지구의 하늘을 푸르게 만드는 원인이기도 하다. 

리겔과 마녀 머리 성운, 그리고 이들을 둘러싸고 있는 가스와 먼지들은 800광년 거리에 위치하고 있다.

Rigel and the Witch Head Nebula

Explanation: Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble -- maybe Macbeth should have consulted the Witch Head Nebula. The suggestively shaped reflection nebula is associated with the bright star Rigel in the constellation Orion. More formally known as IC 2118, the Witch Head Nebula spans about 50 light-years and is composed of interstellar dust grains reflecting Rigel's starlight. In this cosmic portrait, the blue color of the Witch Head Nebula and of the dust surrounding Rigel is caused not only by Rigel's intense blue starlight but because the dust grains scatter blue light more efficiently than red. The same physical process causes Earth's daytime sky to appear blue, although the scatterers inEarth's atmosphere are molecules of nitrogen and oxygen. Rigel, the Witch Head Nebula, and gas and dust that surrounds them lie about 800 light-years away.
